The Event Data Recorders (EDR), often referred to as a vehicle’s “black box,” has been a mandated requirement by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in all vehicles manufactured since 2014.
Crash Data Retrieval (CDR) equipment is required to download recorded data from a vehicle’s EDR. The recorded data is only stored if certain parameters are met in a crash, in the moments leading up to the event, and for a short time afterwards. This includes data such as vehicle speed, air bag deployment, throttle position, brake application, and seat belt use, among other information. This data is typically saved between modules within the vehicle, which are extremely durable and mounted in safe areas, with the two most common modules being the Airbag Control Module (ACM) and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
BioEx Consulting utilizes Bosch CDR equipment and employs trained technicians and analysts capable of downloading, preserving, and interpreting EDR data from a motor vehicle crash.
